Looking for higher conversion rates?
I really hope you answered that question with a YES!
The practice is identical to one of my previous posts where I spoke about “Interlinking Posts” for SEO value, but instead of linking to an internal post… you directly link to a product you may be speaking about in your post.
Important things to remember:
Send the reader directly to the product you are speaking about!
Bad Example: “I got the coolest Pirate Pencil Sharpener from my brother for my birthday last year!”
Good Example: “I got the coolest Pirate Pencil Sharpener from my brother for my birthday last year!”
What makes these posts good and bad? Lets start with the bad. Yes I did take the proper steps and build a custom affiliate link to the merchants site, but I landed my reader on the home page. BAD! I am now leaving it up to my reader to search the merchants site for the particular product that got them to click over in the first place. In the majority, you have lost that sale!
Now the good… I used the same “create a custom link” feature in ShareASale to create my link, but what i did this time was take my reader directly to the add product to cart page for the exact product I wrote about. GOOD! This cuts down on all of the unnecessary clicks your reader should have to go through to find the product and WILL increase your conversion rate tremendously.
My Point: Take the time to do the work for your readers. You worked so hard to get them to your site… so make it as easy as possible for them to “close the deal”!

March 19, 2011 at 3:48 amThat’s a great tip; I know people are lazy – heck, I’m lazy :O) – I never park the car at the back of the car park – it has to be as close to the front door as possible LOL.

May 27, 2011 at 11:06 amIt does work but you run the risk that the merchant
relocates the product and then the link does not work anymore or leads to the wrong product.
If you have a lot of products to sell on your site
then you lsoe a lot of time if you check all products every months or so…

June 20, 2011 at 7:23 pmHow does this work with the ftc rules? I thought you had to let people know that it is an affiliate link and that you will be earning money if they buy through this link. I know you used to be able to do this…correct me if I’m wrong.

June 21, 2011 at 12:37 pm@Diane: As long as you disclose your FTC disclaimer on your site and have a link to it on all of your web pages, you are fine. You do not need to point out the specific link saying (this is an affiliate link)
Best.
