Why should you interlink blog posts? Three reasons… Usefulness to your readers, SEO and to increase your page views.
How is interlinking useful to your readers? It provides a better experience and makes your blog more useful. If someone comes to a post from a search engine and finds a post that not only answers a question that they have but that also provides further reading and suggestions on where they can explore related topics – they’re more likely to go away from your site satisfied and more than likely to return to your site in the future.
How does interlinking benefit SEO? Search engines generally assume that a blog post that has been linked to has more authority than one that has not. They also consider exactly what word or phrase linked to the post; a blog post about “Blog Post Titles” is going to be more likely to show up in Google searches on the subject if another page links the word “Blog Post Titles” to the post.
You’ll get the most value from external links from search engines already consider to be an authority of the subject (if the top blog about “Blog Post Titles” links the word to your post, you’ll get a huge boost), but all incoming links will still pass rank to your page, even those from elsewhere on your site.
So be sure and link important keywords to other pages or previous posts on your blog to gain some credibility and search rank. It will make a BIG difference. JUST DON’T OVERDO IT! Not only do human readers hate reading blogs filled with links that they might accidentally click on something, search engines may penalize you if you go overboard.
How does interlinking posts increase page views? You are creating a bigger impression upon the person visiting your blog. If someone views more than a single page on your blog they’re more likely to remember it, subscribe to it, comment upon it and become a regular and loyal reader.

February 12, 2011 at 9:56 pmHey Jason – I think a good follow-up question would be what’s an upper limit on the number of links per x # of words?
Personally, I don’t think about it very much, but instead link where I see it adding value (and I don’t necessarily restrict it to just my own content, b/c it’s called *web* for a reason). Of course, I don’t want my content looking like Wikipedia!
My own results end up being somewhere about 1-2 links per 300-500 words. Sometimes even none.
YMMV.
