St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and in Chicago we are well known for celebrating in style! Chicago’s Irish roots run deep and we all pretend to be Irish for a day. Many might say that we’re all “Chi-Rish”.
End the hibernation!
One of the first things we tend to do on this “Lucky” day is shed our coats! Historically, March 17 is one of the first “warm” days of the year and Chicagoans can come out from hibernation! For example, in 2012 St. Patrick’s Day saw temperatures nearing 90 degrees!
Makin’ it green for 52 years!
Since our “Chi-Rish” roots run so deep here, we also have a tendency to turn everything green – beer, food, water and even the Chicago River (disclaimer, it’s usually pretty green, but we just make it MORE green). According to the Huffington Post, Chicago has been dying the river green for 51 years and 2014 marks the 52nd year!
Clog the ol’ arteries!
After the river is green, we turn to what has made Chicago the “City of Broad Shoulders” – FOOD! Chicago has some of the best food in the country (in my opinion), and St. Patty’s Day brings out the best in the Irish cuisine! Ranging from Sheppard’s Pie to Corned Beef and Cabbage, we have what you need to clog those arteries! Check out Forbes’ Travel Guide Blog to find some of the best Chicago-Irish Restaurants!
Get your gear on!
If you plan on visiting Chicago during this time, be prepared for long lines and green beer. It’s also a good idea to get your gear a head of time! Check out some of our merchants selling Chicago-Irish and/or St. Patrick’s Day specific gear!
