Things I Miss About the Vintage Web

July 10, 2013 by ShareASale 10 Comments

#1 Websites with ~ in them.

My own personal page had one… I think I was:

http://ix.netcom.com/~idontremember

Sadly, that goes nowhere now.   I’m sure it looked just as cool as this ~ website.

Check out this site detailing why you should never put a ~ in a web address…. ironically, this site indeed features a tilde!!! ~~~~

#2 Netscape Navigator 3.0 (Gold!)

Surfing the web AND being able to edit web pages all at once? What an amazing concept. Actually, what I miss most is the comforting little wagon wheel thing.

Check out the full history of browsers – amazing image timeline!!

#3 Jeeves. Yes, I miss him.

Jeeves added personality to the search… while maybe not the best at actually searching… he was a clever fellow nonetheless! Side note – take a look at this site which offers an awesome look at the history of search engines!!!
Search Engine History.com

Search Engine History.com

The concept of hypertext and a memory extension really came to life in July of 1945, when after enjoying the scientific camaraderie that was a side effect of WWII, Vannevar Bush’s As We May Think was published in The Atlantic Monthly. He urged scientists to work together to help build a body of knowledge for all mankind. Here are a few selected sentences and paragraphs that drive his point home. Specialization becomes increasingly necessary for progress, and the effort to bridge between disciplines is correspondingly superficial.

#4 This Sound

It was so much fun to figure out how fast things were going to go based on all the little noises… like a game within a game!

The Dial Up Noise – YouTube

3 minutes, 25 and a half seconds of nothing but the dial up noise.

And all these great soundbites from AOL

AOL 9.0 Sounds – YouTube

These are all the AOL 9.0 sounds you may hear!

#5 All the Fun Graphics and Pictures

Like the ever popular “Under Construction”…

#6 Original Animated .GIFs (2 states only please!)

While finding the perfect example – I stumbled upon this version of Lego’s homepage (yes, the real one!!) from quite some time ago… Beautiful!

#9 Matt’s Script Archive

Ahh…the good days of Perl Scripts.   What would we all have done without Matt’s wonderful site!?

#10 ALT.TV.SIMPSONS

Before the luxury of Facebook came along to help us kill time… Alt.TV.Simpsons had every little soundbite, icon, image, and whatever else we needed !

alt.tv.simpsons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

alt.tv.simpsons – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

alt.tv.simpsons (called “a.t.s.” by regular readers) is a usenet newsgroup dedicated to discussing the American television program, The Simpsons. Created in 1990, the newsgroup became a popular community in the early 1990s, and continues to exist as of 2012. The newsgroup is known for reviewing the episodes and nitpicking on minor details on the show.

#11 Napster!

The “horizontal” in general has fallen out of favour… and the rainbow was definitely the best kind. One could never just have “1” rainbow horizontal…they traveled in packs.

My first site was GeoCities. It taught me to learn html. Ahh, yes, the wonders of a dial-up connection. I wonder if it will let me upload this huge 55kb graphic..

YES! I love the dial up sound. Those were the good old days when we would use our free hours on AOL cds to go online and into chat rooms. Good times.

I know both Joel and my GeoCities pages still exist in a fashion on Archive.org. We were “neighbors” in Paris. The menus (being separate html pages) are archived separately from the actual pages, but the content is still there.

One of the earliest sites that still makes me chuckle is The Really Big Button That Doesn’t Do Anything.

Our web site is still just about as I made it in the 90s. But we had one on Geocities and a few other free web site places. Always loved the cool little animated gifs and plain web sites, Low-res and lightweight enough for fast viewing on dialup. Cool beans! If you miss the old Netscape Navigator or Communicator, the closest thing now is called Sea Monkey. Based on Firefox code but looks and feels a lot like Netscape 4.8 or so. Funny, but I spend a lot of time at Archive.org looking through copies of old web sites. :)
