I hope your hat has some strong elastic in it, because there is a big wind of change coming your way that is sure to blow that hat right off your head!
OK, that was a bit of an over dramatic intro, but needless to say I am pretty excited about today’s #TheInterface update which is all about the Personalized Commission Rules.
For those that may not have used this tool, Personalized Commission Rules are a way that Merchants can create flexible and custom payouts based on a variety of condition options. You can access this page by clicking the “Manage Advanced Commission Structures” link inside your Edit Settings page (My Account > Edit Settings).
The first thing you will notice is the new page layout (see below).
New! Predefined Rules
As you can see, the new page includes a section for “Predefined Rules”. This is great for any Merchant that might be looking for a little inspiration on ways to use Commission Rules or as a quick load for some of the most commonly used rules. If you would like to use add a predefined rule, just click the blue title and a new rule will load. The rule can then be edited or customized to change items such as the commission action (payout) or add additional conditions.
The predefined rules have been grouped into three categories; rules that could be used to incentivize new affiliates, transaction based rules, and rules based on clickstream attribution.
New! User added clickstream attribution rules
Which brings me to another update – clickstream attribution. Our clickstream data (found in the Transaction Detail Report) will show you a timeline with prior clicks, as well as the commissioned click and the transaction. So for example, in the screenshot below, the blue dot represents the transaction, the green dot is the commissioned click, and the purple dots are the previous clicks.
What clickstream attribution means is Merchants are able to assign commission based on when a click took place and/or which Affiliate generated the click. Adding this type of commission previously needed to be set up through the ShareASale tech support and now Merchants are able to set up this commission directly in their account themselves.
New! Negative Commission Action
Another update that relates to attribution is the Merchant’s ability to assign a negative amount to the commission action. This might be used by a Merchant if they have set up a “Leapfrog Transaction” rule that looks at the click activity of specific Affiliates within the clickstream.
There are some examples of the most commonly used clickstream attribution commissions listed under the predefined rules. Rules based on clickstream can be very complicated so so please click the green question mark to the right of each predefined rule to learn more about how these special commissions work, or contact ShareASale for assistance.
New! Creative Based Condition
Our last update regarding the personalized commission rules is the addition of creative based commission. This means Merchants will now have the ability to commission Affiliates based on a specific creative type or creative ID used in the transaction (see below). Creative type could include banner/text links, product links, coupons, widgets, gift cards, videos, or special/FORM links. So there are a lot opportunities where a rule could be created as a special bonus promotion built around specific creative you would like the Affiliates to be marketing.
New! Commission Rules Tutorial
If you have any questions, there is also a new tutorial writeup available at the top of the page (click the “Launch Tutorial” button), or you can get more details on any of the predefined rules by clicking the green question mark icon listed to the right of each rule.
I know this was a lot to digest. So, to summarize, today’s Personalized Commission Rule updates are:
- Predefined Rules added
- Clickstream attribution rules can be user added
- Added the ability to put in negative commission action
- New creative based condition
- Tutorial available to explain how it all works

March 5, 2013 at 6:06 pmHi there,
How would I go about setting up a rule for affiliates who bring in a certain amount of revenue or certain number of orders per month to receive a higher commission percentage?
For example:
Total Monthly Order Value of $1-100: 12%
$101-500: 15%
$500+: 18%
I believe this is called progressive commission tiers.
Thank you!

You could set this type of commission up using performance metric commissions. You’ll see a tab for “Performance Metrics” listed on the Advanced Commission Structures page inside your account settings.
I sent you an email as well, so I can personally walk you through any questions you may have.

September 17, 2013 at 7:23 amHi,
I want to give a one-time 50% bonus to the affiliates who will cross $100 commissions for the month. How do I do that?
The structure that I created doesn’t seem to work correctly.
‘Add flat amount – 50 if Commissions for the Current Month Greater Than or Equal To 100.’ it adds $50 to every transaction if the affiliate has reached the $100 commissions level, though it was supposed to be one-time bonus.
And also what does Stop Processing More Rules mean?
Thank you so much in advance.
