On a busy day do you ever dream of kicking a leg up and enjoying some valuable “me time”? Well today, on World Sauntering Day, slow down, relax, and enjoy the world around you! According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the verb ‘sauntering’ describes an idle or leisurely manner in walking. In other words, when you saunter, you are just enjoying where you are with a nice, luxurious stroll.
It is fitting that the headquarters for World Sauntering Day is held at the the fancy vacation spot of Mackinac Island, Michigan. On Mackinac Island there are no cars allowed and transportation is done solely by horse, bicycle, and foot. The white-columned Grand Hotel is the founding place for the World Sauntering Society, where U.S. Presidents, dignitaries and movie stars have sauntered on the 104-year old porch. Guests can saunter the 660-foot porch or choose to explore the island full of woodsy trails, small shops, home-made fudge stores (ever heard of Mackinac Island Fudge?), or sit back on the lakeshore!
According to the World Sauntering Society Archivist W.T. Rabe, “Sauntering is distinguished from lollygagging, sashaying, jogging, and walking. The general idea is to smell the roses when you walk and to pay attention to the world around you.”
